The Council of Ministers yesterday approved the multi-year grant of 13,848,692 euros to carry out the Comprehensive Water Management Program in Urban Areas in Bolivia through the Ministry of Environment and Water (MMAYA) of the Andean country.

The objective of the action, financed with European funds, is to improve the management of water resources in urban areas with more than 2,000 inhabitants, by increasing and improving access to sanitation services under a vision of comprehensive water management .

The amount approved represents the majority of the cooperation funds delegated by the European Union to the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) to carry out this project, which, in its entirety, has a budget of 15 million euros. .

The rest of the funds are distributed between a multi-year in-kind aid intended to cover support costs for administrative management, communication, visibility, evaluation and audit of the Program and management costs of AECID, an entity that also provides the added value of the experience in Spain and Latin America of the Cooperation Fund for Water and Sanitation (FCAS) and of the public and private institutions that participate in the initiative, such as the Center for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works (CEDEX), the Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO) and the Spanish public company Tragsatec, as well as other operators.

For its part, the Cooperation Fund for Water and Sanitation (FCAS) will also contribute to the program with a donation of 3 million euros , destined to the development and implementation of tools and capacities to ensure the water supply in cities at risk of suffering. water stress.

The final objective is to create a global operation with a donation contribution (18 million euros) and another main one of credits from State to State to support the Program, for an amount of 130 million dollars co-financed between AECID, through FONPRODE and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Of this amount, FONPRODE would contribute 30 million dollars and the remaining amount the IDB.

The overall objective of the Program is to contribute to the improvement of the integral management of water resources in urban areas and it is expected that it will directly benefit some 515,000 households with new or improved access to drinking water and approximately 16,000 households with access to sanitation.
